One very important thing for every student to learn is Time management. College students need to learn the importance of time, and its effective management. As a student, you get loaded with lots of responsibilities like campus activities, multiple classes, homework, extracurricular activities, social obligations, etc. Time management is like a challenge for all students because they need to make best use of the time and not hurry up with their studies at the last moment during exams. Below are a few tips as to how students can manage time:
You must maintain a calendar with all the details: It is very difficult to keep in mind everything, which has to be done. You need to be very systematic by keeping track of the necessary obligations and deadlines you have to meet. You can choose something that is easy for you, for instance you can maintain a weekly planner, Microsoft outlook, desk calendars, PDA and other such high tech methods. A few students find this method very helpful and a great solution to their problems. When you know, you have a particular deadline immediately record it, so that as your deadline comes closer you can set frequent reminders if possible. Make sure you have put down your daily work schedule as well. By doing this you will save lots of time and will avoid delay of work.
Plan your timing well: it is not sensible to grab all your books and begin the work until you finish it, as you might just not have enough time to complete all your errands. First find out how long you will need to finish each task, then put this on your calendar. Keep some extra time to buy poker supplies, just in case any task takes more than the time expected. Also, ensure you have study breaks at regular intervals, because this gives you more efficiency and peace of mind and relaxes your body.
Prioritize: if there is a long list of the tasks to be completed, then you should prioritize each, giving immediate attention to the urgently required assignments than the others. If chemistry is more important than history then it should be given time first, but make sure you do not use up all the time and are left with very little time for history. You need to prioritize obligations, activities etc. Do not over commit your time, if there are tasks, which need time to be completed well then you, must lessen your obligations towards friends, campus leisure, etc. You must learn the art of saying ‘no’ to people, and learn to accept it from others as well.
Avoid the two “D’s” - delay and Distraction: Having study breaks are good but delaying your studies minute by minute are not. It is difficult to be on time, however if learn to manage time effectively then you can avoid all delays. There are many distractions for college students these days, which are not easy to resist like for example computer games, hair bows, mobile phones, iPods, etc. One must keep their study time separate from their leisure time.
When you are a college-going student you have no one to help, you manage your time other than yourself. The biggest difference between college and school is that you’re not constantly reminded about your obligations and your deadlines. You are old enough to initiate things yourself in your own way, make sure you organize yourself.
